Colouring Competition 2021

Once again we are organising a Colouring Competition, and the subject of the 2021 picture is ‘Alfred the Great ….as a child’. The picture has, like last year, been drawn for us by our dear Christian friend in America.
Alfred became king in 871AD, so this year marks the 1150th anniversary of his coming to the throne.
As a child, it is said that Alfred won a beautifully decorated book of English poetry, offered as a prize by his mother to the first of her sons able to memorise it. Queen Osburga must have read it to them, as it is said that Alfred did not actually learn to read for himself until he was 12 years old! Our colouring picture shows Alfred with two of his brothers, looking at the book with his mother. (Incidentally, some have suggested the book was actually ’the Book of Books’, the Bible). Alfred had a thirst for knowledge and became a great lover of books; he read the Bible daily, and learned many of the Psalms by heart.
King Alfred is remembered for the defeat of the Danes, the establishment of the Navy and recognising the importance of education—he made Oxford a great Centre of learning. As a Christian king, believing the Bible to be the Word of God, he tried to rebuild the nation on biblical principles, establishing English Law based on the Ten Commandments. He translated, or had translated, a number of books into Anglo-Saxon, including the first part of ‘The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle’ .
King Alfred played a vital part in our Christian heritage….he was a wise and devout Christian man and it was said of him that ‘he loved the right, and he did the right.’ He was loved by his people, and came to be called Alfred the Truth Teller. He is the only English king to have been given the title ‘ the Great’.
Details of the Competition:
We would like to encourage children to take part from Home, Schools and Sunday Schools across the country – there are no territorial limits!
· The pictures will be judged in 4 age groups…..3-4 years, 5-7 years, 8-11 years and 12+ years
· The closing date for the Competition is 14th May 2021
· Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd in each age category.
