Colouring Competition 2022

24 Feb 2022 | Uncategorized

Once again we are organising a Colouring Competition, and the subject of the 2022 picture  is  ‘The Presentation of the Bible to the Queen at the Coronation’. The picture has once again been drawn for us by our dear Christian friend in America.

It seems most appropriate this year, as we mark the  Platinum Anniversary of the Queen.

The tradition of handing the Bible to the Monarch at the Coronation probably dates back to the days of Edward VI when , as the Coronation procession gathered at the door of Westminster Abbey, ready to process up the aisle for the actual Coronation, he caused some consternation when he said ‘One sword is missing’ . The intention was that the procession would be proceeded by the carrying of swords representing the kingdoms over which he was to rule. He insisted that one was missing, and all wondered what he meant, until he explained—’What is missing is the Sword of the Spirit – the Word of God’. He added ‘This is to be preferred before these; it ought in all things to govern us; without it we are nothing, and can do nothing. He who rules without it, is not to be called God’s minister or a King’.

An open Bible was then carried at the head of the procession towards the archbishop who placed the crown on his head.

Elizabeth II became Queen in February 1952 and her coronation took place in Westminster   Abbey on 2nd June 1953. The Moderator of the Church of Scotland presented  her with the Bible, with the words ‘Here is Wisdom, this is the Royal Law: these are the Lively Oracles of God.’

Inspiration for  our colouring picture was drawn from photos taken on the day of the Coronation, which showed intricate detail on the Queen’s gown.  Mrs Griffin has added the emblems of England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales in the four corners.  This reminds us that the Queen is Head of State and rules over the nations of the United Kingdom.
