Colouring Competition 2023

Once again we are organising a Colouring Competition, and the subject of this year’s picture is ‘David Livingstone – Christian Missionary and Explorer’. The picture has once again been drawn for us by our dear Christian friend in America.
2023 marks the 150th Anniversary of the death of David Livingstone.
Born in Blantyre, Scotland in 1813, he died aged 60, on the mission-field in Zambia. From humble beginnings, working in a cotton mill from the age of ten, attending the village school in addition to working long 14 hour days, he became an avid reader with a keen interest in nature and science. Becoming a Christian, he took a keen interest in missionary work, and studied medicine, becoming a doctor. He was accepted by the London Missionary Society and left England for South Africa in November 1840.
From Cape Town he travelled to Kuruman, a desert region inhabited by nomadic tribes. As he travelled, he became aware that the slave trade was still going on, carried out by the Arabs. He encountered disease and danger wherever he went. He was determined to preach the Gospel, abolish the slave trade and find a way into the unexplored heart of Africa for missionary and medical works and the benefits of civilisation.
He died in Africa whilst on his knees in prayer on 1st May 1873. He was buried in Westminster Abbey but his heart was buried in Africa.
His motto—now inscribed on his statue at Victoria Falls—was “Christianity, Commerce and Civilization”, a combination that he hoped would form an alternative to the slave trade, and impart dignity to the Africans.
David Livingstone is an example to us all – his hard work, determination and enquiring mind in his early years, in addition to his faith in a mighty God, taught him persistence and endurance, and resulted in his being recognised as one of the best-known missionaries and explorers of the Victorian period.

We would like to encourage children to take part in the competition from Home, Schools and Sunday Schools across the Country – there are no territorial limits!
· The pictures will be judged in 4 age groups. 3-4 years,5-7 years,8-11 years and 12+ years
· The closing date for the Competition is 6th May 2023
· Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd in each age category.
